don Juan de Onate's Map

Click on the image to make it larger

don Juan de Onate's campaign in search of Quivera, now Kansas. This map was made in 1602 by Enrico Martinez and indicates where he went to and which route he took. Onate's New Mexico is in the upper left hand corner and the Rio del Robredal (Arhansas) and the Great Settlement of Quivara on the upper right. An amazing map from the past. It's accuracy is amazing. I attended a lecture on it, wish I remembered the name of the person doing the presentation. He was a past Super. of the Fort Union National Monument.
