La Sagrada Familia Catholic Church in Rowe, New Mexico
There were few presents under the tree, if you had a tree. We used to have one but only lit the lights every now and then.
Mrs. Carlos (Maude) Creamer and Gumicenda Benavides had popcorn balls, mi madrina Teresita Archuleta had panocha. Others had candy cane, bischochitos, ginger snaps, fig newtons, apples, oranges. You never knew what you would get.
I wonder when it started and why? When did the practice die out?

I am interested in knowing who wrote this article. I am Teresita Archuletas daughter. This was one of my favorite memories growing up. Mis Christmas was always something we looked forward to yearly. The only village I know of who still to this day give Mis Christmas is in north San Isidro NM. The tradition is slowly dying there as well.

Rose, The "Teresita Archuleta" I refered to here in this post was the wife of my padrino Telesfor Archuleta. There were two Teresita Archuleta in Rowe at the time. I used to stop at your parents place too, remember it fondly at this time of the year.
Oh yes he married a Teresita Gallegos in 1918. My tio Telesfor was my dads uncle. My grandfather was Esequeil Archuleta. Thank you for sharing this what a wonderful story. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
